What to Know Before Going to Costa Rica: A First-Timer’s Guide
If you’re wondering what to know before going to Costa Rica, it’s that this is a country where rainforest meets luxury, adventure blends with wellness, and nature is always center stage. One day, you might be ziplining through the jungle canopy or spotting sloths along a cloud forest trail. Next, you’re sipping fresh coconut water on a golden beach with the sound of howler monkeys in the distance.
Whether you’re visiting for the wild beauty, the pura vida lifestyle, or a dream vacation at a luxury villa like Villa Punto de Vista, these are the top tips to help you feel confident and prepared for your first trip to Costa Rica (with some extra tips for guests staying with us at the villa!).
1. The local currency is the colón, but USD is widely accepted
Costa Rica’s official currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC), but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, especially in tourist areas. That said, you’ll often get a better deal and less hassle by using local currency, especially in more rural towns, small shops, or for things like taxis, tips, or local markets. ATMs are common, and some will even allow you to withdraw in either colones or dollars.
Villa Tip: Some guests bring cash for tips, souvenirs, snacks on the way to and from the villa, or when on excursions, and other small miscellaneous purchases when strolling around Quepos town. But, when heading to Manuel Antonio to stay with us at Villa Punto de Vista, you don’t necessarily need to carry cash if you don’t want to. If you do want to get cash at any point after arriving at the villa, the property’s driver can bring you to the ATM right down the street in the villa’s private vehicle. No taxis needed.
2. Pack for Multiple Microclimates
Despite Costa Rica’s tropical reputation, the country is actually home to a surprising range of climates thanks to its varied elevation and terrain. One minute you’re sunbathing on the warm sands of Manuel Antonio, and the next, wrapped in a sweater, watching the clouds roll through the highlands of Monteverde.
On the Pacific coast, including where we are located in Manuel Antonio, expect hot, humid days and cool, comfortable nights, especially between December and April. Lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen or moisture-wicking activewear are ideal here. You’ll want a swimsuit (or two), plenty of sunscreen, and comfortable sandals for both beach lounging and casual strolls.
But many of our guests extend their stay in the country to other areas. So, if you plan to explore inland destinations like La Fortuna, San José, or the cloud forests of Monteverde before or after your time at the villa, be prepared for cooler temps, misty mornings, and sudden downpours, especially during the rainy season (May to November). A light waterproof jacket, long pants, and a cozy sweater or hoodie will go a long way. Layers are key. You might start your day in shorts and end it bundled up by a mountain-view fireplace.
3. You Don’t Need to Speak Spanish, But It’s Nice to Try
English is widely spoken in Costa Rica’s tourism hubs like Manuel Antonio, especially among hotel staff, tour operators, and restaurant servers. That said, locals always appreciate when visitors make an effort to speak a few Spanish phrases, even if it’s just hola (hello), gracias (thank you), or ¿cuánto cuesta? (how much does it cost?).
Villa Tip: The concierge and team at Villa Punto de Vista are bilingual and happy to help translate or coordinate anything you need. But if you’re planning to visit local markets in Quepos or explore beyond the resort areas without a staff member or guide, downloading a translation app or brushing up on a few basic phrases may help with a more seamless experience.
4. Expect Wildlife… Even at Your Doorstep
Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. From colorful toucans to mischievous monkeys, chances are you’ll see more animals in a week here than in a year back home. And you don’t have to go far. All our guests spot wildlife without ever leaving the villa grounds.
Villa Tip: Keep your camera ready! You’ll likely wake up to monkeys leaping through the trees or spot a sloth napping in the canopy outside your bedroom window. The villa’s terraces and infinity pool offer the perfect vantage point for jungle-to-ocean wildlife watching.
5. Tap Water is Safe, So Bring a Refillable Bottle
Good news: in most parts of Costa Rica, including Manuel Antonio, the tap water is safe to drink. That means you can skip the plastic water bottles without worrying about getting sick. Bottled water is still available just about everywhere, but many travelers opt to bring a reusable bottle—not just for convenience, but as a small, conscious choice that makes a big difference.
Costa Rica has long been a global leader in sustainability. Nearly all of its electricity comes from renewable sources, and the country has pledged to become carbon neutral. But like many small tropical nations, it still struggles with plastic pollution, particularly in coastal regions. By bringing a refillable bottle, you help reduce single-use waste in a place where preserving nature is more than a priority—it’s a national identity.
Villa Tip: The villa provides ultra-filtered water and refill stations for both still and sparkling water throughout the property, so there’s no need to stock up on bottled water. It’s one small way we help guests travel more sustainably. Many eco-conscious travelers love this simple way to reduce their footprint while enjoying the pura vida lifestyle.
6. The Sun is Strong, Even When It’s Cloudy
Don’t be fooled by overcast skies. The UV index in Costa Rica is high, and sunburns happen fast, especially near the equator. If you’re planning to hike, surf, or relax poolside, reapply sunscreen often and don’t forget your hat and sunglasses.
Villa Tip: The villa experience means many of our guests spend hours outdoors, whether sipping cocktails on the rooftop or lounging by the pool. To stay cool and protected, we recommend packing reef-safe sunscreen and wearing breathable cover-ups. You’ll thank yourself later. Our team also has some sunscreen on hand and can bring you to the convenience store at any point if you need to replenish.
7. Adventure is Easy to Access, Even If You Stay Put
Costa Rica is famous for its outdoor experiences, and Manuel Antonio is one of the best regions to enjoy them. Whether you’re into ziplining, wildlife tours, or just beach hopping, there’s no shortage of options. But what many guests don’t realize is how much adventure can happen without leaving the villa.
Villa Tip: From private yoga on the rooftop to chef-led Costa Rican cooking classes and in-villa spa treatments, many of our guests enjoy a full vacation without ever stepping foot off-property. But when you are ready to explore, the concierge can arrange guided hikes, surf lessons, or sunset sails—many departing just minutes away.
8. Pura Vida Isn’t Just a Saying, It’s a Lifestyle
You’ll hear pura vida a lot in Costa Rica. When someone greets you, when you say thank you, even just passing someone on the street. It means “pure life,” but locals use it to say everything from “no worries” to “life is good.”
What makes pura vida special isn’t just the words but how people live. There’s an ease here, a presence. Locals take time to enjoy the moment, to connect, to live simply and fully. And for many visitors, that energy is what stays with them long after the trip ends.
Villa Tip: The moment you walk into Villa Punto de Vista, you’ll start to feel it. Maybe it’s the warm welcome from the team. Or the breeze rolling off the Pacific as you sit on your balcony. Or the way your whole group slows down without even trying. Around here, pura vida isn’t something you say, it’s something you settle into.
